Strong vision is your best asset!
🚀 A strong (product) vision is your best asset!
SVPG keeps talking about how the biggest weakness of companies is a missing product/business strategy. And while that's really where the good separates from the bad, increasingly more, I see the struggle to be a strong vision.
Surprisingly enough, I've seen companies present their strategy as a vision. I have seen them confuse vision and mission. I've seen next year's business goals to be spoken about as a vision. None of these are, or can supplement a vision.
🔮 A vision talks about how your company and your products impact the world. How will the world look like in 30 years when your product is used by everyone?
🌠 This is the ultimate north star that guides you. It's the best hiring tool, especially for product people. It's a strong motivator. It's a great communication thread towards your customers. It's the best marketing tool for storytelling. It's what keeps you running forward.
If a company does not have a strong product vision, it will start focusing on business goals. Eventually, it will run out of ideas, it will stop innovating, it will die slowly and painfully.
💡 Yet, there must be a reason why the company exists. There was a problem that someone wanted to solve, and chances are, that problem was big and hasn't been solved yet. The company will run much faster if everyone has a purpose and runs towards the same long-term change.
